Split Pea Soup
What does it include?
Ingredients
- 1 kilo of ham
- 200g peas (soaked overnight)
- 2 onions chopped
- 2 carrots chopped
- 2 bay leaves
- 1 celery chopped
- 300 g frozen peas
- serve bread
How to prepare it step by step?
Preparation
- Place the ham in a large saucepan with 2 liters of water and bring to a boil. Remove from heat, drain, and rinse to reduce saltiness. Refill with 2 liters of cold water and bring to a boil again.
- Add all ingredients except the frozen peas. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cook for 1½-2½ hours, adding water as needed to maintain the initial level.
- As the ham softens, cut it in half if necessary to ensure it's submerged. When tender enough to shred, it's ready.
- Remove the ham, peel, and discard the skin. While warm (use gloves), shred the meat.
- Remove the bay leaf and add the frozen peas. Simmer for 1 minute, then blend until smooth.
- If too thick, add a splash of water. Reheat gently if making ahead.
- Mix hot soup with most of the ham; reheat gently if necessary.
- Serve in bowls with remaining ham on top, accompanied by crusty bread and butter.
